ABOUT
Dorotea Saykaly is a choreographer, movement director and performing artist whose acclaimed work has been presented internationally. Originally from Montreal, Canada Dorotea has enjoyed a rewarding career as a dancer with choreographer Marie Chouinard as well as with the Goteborg Danskompani in Sweden where she worked with renowned choreographers such as Sidi Larbi Cherkaoui, Sharon Eyal, Damien Jalet, Marina Mascarell, Marcos Morau and Alan Lucien Oyen.
She went on to pursue their own creativity while focusing on developing her body of work. Her craft both as a creator and performer moves fluidly from the stage, to film, to the visual/digital arts field. Her works often dive into the power in fragility and beauty of humanity while utilising a sci-fi renaissance approach to storytelling.
In 2021 she was awarded the Inaugural Emily Molnar Emerging Choreographer Award which came with the opportunity to create a new work RELIC for Ballet BC. Since then she has created SUNKEN for the TERRITORIO V youth company in Lisbon, BLACK MOON for Ballet Edmonton, and THE WATCHERS for Danish Dance Theatre.
She has collaborated choreographically with the Swedish photographer duo Cooper & Gorfer on their international exhibit UTOPIA in 2021 which toured to Fotografiska museums worldwide.
Her most recent film SHE, co-created with Danish Film Director Emil Dam Seidel, had its North American premier at the Fotografiska Museum NYC and has been awarded Best Choreography at DanceOnScreen Film Festival in Graz, Best Experimental film with SIFF in Stockholm and Honourable Mentions with Around Film Festival Barcelona.
Currently based in Copenhagen, Dorotea has worked and collaborated on eclectic projects with choreographers from all over the world, such as: Damien Jalet (Netflix film ANIMA, by Paul Thomas Anderson), Ina Christel Johannessen (stage work When Monday Came and The Guest, Marie Chouinard (Films bODY_rEMIX and The Rite of Spring) and Sidi Larbi Cherkaoui (movie Cyrano by Joe Wright). As well, she was the lead role in the short film ‘CHANGE’ for the #Girlsinvest campaign by Philippe Templeman choreographed by Sidi Larbi Cherkaoui.
She joined Eastman Dance Company / Sidi Larbi Cherkaoui for the latest creation of Vlaemsch (chez moi) working both as an actor and dancer..
Always looking to expand past her comfort zone, she is currently working on a holographic dance installation with her creative partner Emil Dam Seidel, a multi-disciplinary work focusing on our search for purpose.
